چکیده

Using the most recent (1998) version of the VLA FIRST survey radio catalog, we have searched for radio emission from 1704 quasars taken from the most recent (1993) version of the Hewitt and Burbidge quasar catalog. These quasars lie in the ∼5000 square degrees of sky already covered by the VLA FIRST survey. Our work has resulted in positive detection of radio emission from 389 quasars of which 69 quasars have been detected for the first time at radio wavelengths. We find no evidence of correlation between optical and radio luminosities for optically selected quasars. We find indications of a bimodal distribution of radio luminosity, even at a low flux limit of 1mJy. We show that radio luminosity is a good discriminant between radio loud and radio quiet quasar populations, and that it may be inappropriate to make such a division on the basis of the radio to optical luminosity ratio. We discuss the dependence of the radio loud fraction on optical luminosity and redshift. Subject headings: quasars: general– methods: statistical– catalogs– surveys

Evidence for a black hole in a radio-quiet quasar nucleus

We present the first milli-arcsecond resolution radio images of a radio-quiet quasar, detecting a high brightness temperature core with data from the VLBA. On maps made with lower-frequency data from MERLIN and the VLA jets appear to emanate from the core in opposite directions, which correspond to radio-emission on arcsecond scales seen with the VLA at higher frequencies. These provide strong ...

Radio Emission from AGN detected by the VLA FIRST Survey

Using the most recent (April 2003) version of the VLA FIRST survey radio catalog, we have searched for radio emission from > 2800 AGN taken from the most recent (2001) version of the Veron-Cetty and Veron AGN catalog. These AGN lie in the ∼9033 square degrees of sky already covered by the VLA FIRST survey. Our work has resulted in positive detection of radio emission from 775 AGN of which 214 a...

Improved constraints on the cosmological parameters using the VLA FIRST survey

Using the final version of the VLA FIRST survey (Becker et al. 2003), the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 (DR3) quasar list and a series of carefully selected criteria, we have defined the largest homogeneous population of double-lobed sources. With the precise sample definition, the increased depth and sensitivity of the survey data, the large size of the dataset, and our self-...

Radio Identification of the X-ray Jet in the Z=4.3 Quasar Gb 1508+5714 C. C. Cheung

The recent discovery of an X-ray jet in the z=4.3 quasar GB 1508+5714 by Yuan et al. (astro-ph/0309318) and Siemiginowska et al. (astro-ph/0310241) prompted a search for its radio counterpart. Here, we report the successful discovery of faint radio emission from the jet at 1.4 GHz using archival VLA data. Possible interpretations of the X-ray jet as synchrotron or inverse Compton emission off t...

The FIRST Radio-Loud Broad Absorption Line QSO and Evidence for a Hidden Population of Quasars

We have discovered two low-ionization broad absorption line quasars in programs to obtain optical spectra for radio-selected quasar candidates from the VLA FIRST Survey (Becker, White, & Helfand 1995). Both belong to the extremely rare class of BAL QSOs that exhibit narrow absorption lines from
